What are Michelin Stars?
May 10th, 2011 | Kerry
The Michelin guide produces annual reviews of restaurants in over a dozen countries, ranking them from one to three stars. Only the most elite restaurants in the world receive a three star rating. Highly-trained, anonymous reviewers take to the restaurants every year to establish the rankings.
The restaurant ranking guide is commonly known as the Red Guide, with a bright red cover to identify itself uniquely. Red Guides are available for most of Europe, as this is where the publication originated. It has gradually expanded to include cities and countries around the world.
Originally published in 1900, the Michelin Guide was developed by Frenchman Andre Michelin. He wanted to produce a publication which helped drivers maintain their cars as well as find suitable lodging and restaurants while on a driving tour.
Restaurants today strive to achieve even a one star ranking from the Michelin Guide, and a three star ranking is coveted throughout the world. According to the Michelin Guide, three stars represent ‘exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey’. I have been fortunate to have dined in five star restaurants with beautiful Birmingham escorts, great food with great company.
