Grammar: An Outdoor Activity

December 16th, 2011 | Kerry

Many English KS2 children have difficulty adding descriptive language to their writing. A change of environment will not only generate excitement for the lesson, but it will give your students a fresh, multi-sensory experience. Begin the lesson by reviewing the five senses. Have students give examples by looking around them outside. On a pad of paper, students will then list only adjectives that describe items around them.

You could have students categorize their adjectives based on senses by folding their writing paper or using separate pages. Allow your students to share their lists with each other. As a class, create sentences by using the word lists.

Use this style of lesson to present other parts of speech to your students. After several outings, students will have a sizable word bank that they have created. Students can quickly create beautiful sentences from their own word bank in future writing assignments.
